Warwick, and the surrounding area, is hosting the Birmingham 2022 (B2022) Cycling Road Races on Sunday 7 August 2022. It is a huge honour for Warwickshire to be staging the cycling road race for the B2022 Commonwealth Games. Billions of viewers are expected to watch the Games, which gives us an incredible opportunity to showcase the beautiful county of Warwickshire.
The Cycling Road Race is one of five events in the B2022 Commonwealth games that will be free to spectate, giving thousands of people the opportunity to line the route and watch some of the world’s best cyclists compete. There will also be a start and finish ticketed venue at St Nicholas Park, which is being hosted by Warwick District Council, in conjunction with B2022.
The Route
The route has been carefully chosen by the Birmingham 2022 Organising Committee, in order to satisfy the requirements of the world governing body for sports cycling and overseas international competitive cycling events, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). Warwickshire County Council is working with the B2022 Organising Committee and partners, to facilitate the safe delivery of this route, to provide a sporting spectacle and show Warwick at its best to a global audience.
The route is a 10-mile loop that starts and finishes on Banbury Road, outside St Nicholas Park. The women will race in the morning, completing 7 laps. The men will race in the afternoon, completing 10 laps. Approximately 160 cyclists will take part, each representing one of the 72 nations and territories that are planning to send teams to the Games.
- Starting on Banbury Road, outside the gates to St Nicholas Park, the course heads north towards Warwick town centre, before taking an immediate left turn onto Jury Street (A429), past Warwick Town Council at Pageant House, with the Collegiate Church of St Mary’s on the right-hand side, and then onto Warwick High Street and past the Lord Leycester Hospital and Westgate.
- The course follows West Street until a right turn onto Shakespeare Avenue and then a left turn onto Hampton Road (A4189), next to Warwick Racecourse. The cyclists then head out towards Hampton on the Hill and the rural section of the course.
- The course passes through the village of Hampton on the Hill. From here the course takes in the more rural roads of Old Budbrooke Road, Church Lane and Ugly Bridge Road, before a right turn to join the Birmingham Road (A4177), with the cyclists heading back towards Warwick.
- Passing over the A46 Stanks Island, the course continues on Birmingham Road (A425) then via Priory Road to Emscote Road, eventually turning right into Princes Drive and all the way past the entrance to Victoria Park in Royal Leamington Spa, the home of the Birmingham 2022 Lawn Bowls and Para Lawn Bowls competition, until a right turn at the roundabout onto Myton Road.
- The final run into the finish is along Myton Road, past Warwick School and Myton Fields, before a right at the Banbury Road roundabout.
- This final part of the course will cross the River Avon, with a stunning view of Warwick Castle and St Nicholas Park.
